Treats from the Herd
Snacks the herd actually demands, in Glytja's words. Always check with your vet before new treats, introduce them slowly, keep portions small, and use horse-safe ingredients only.
My one rule on the trail: no peppermints AND carrots, no tölt. Pay up.
- 2 cups rolled oats
- 1 cup shredded carrot
- 3 horse-safe peppermints, crushed
- 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 2 tbsp molasses
- Stir everything into a sticky dough.
- Roll into small balls and press flat on a lined tray.
- Bake at 350°F for about 15 minutes, until firm.
- Cool fully before serving.
We still make these and think of him every single time.
- 2 cups rolled oats
- 3 tbsp molasses
- 1/4 cup water or unsweetened applesauce
- 1 horse-safe peppermint, crushed (optional)
- Mix into a thick, sticky dough.
- Roll into bite-size balls.
- Chill for 30 minutes to firm up.
- Serve a couple at a time.
Kommi supervises. Use plain Cheerios only, nothing frosted.
- 1 1/2 cups plain Cheerios
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1 mashed ripe banana
- 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
- Mash the banana, then stir in everything else.
- Shape into small patties.
- Bake at 325°F for about 20 minutes.
- Cool completely, then keep in the fridge.
Fróði inspects every batch before he eats. These pass. Royal approval.
- 1 apple, grated (no seeds, no core)
- 2 cups rolled oats
- 1/4 cup oat flour or extra oats
- 1 tbsp molasses
- a pinch of cinnamon
- Combine into a stiff dough, adding a splash of water if dry.
- Roll into balls and flatten slightly.
- Bake at 350°F for about 18 minutes.
- Cool before the taste test.
A note from the barn: every horse is different. Skip any ingredient your horse cannot have, and ask your vet if you are unsure. Love, G.
